When to Use Abbreviations or Acronyms in Formal Writing

Be careful when using common abbreviations and acronyms. Use them too often, or inappropriately, and you may come across as immature or inexperienced.

For example, in a resume never use LOL as it is too informal. Always spell it out completely.

Bad

I have over 25 years experience with Ruby on Rails application development, LOL!

Good

I have over 25 years experience with Ruby on Rails application development, laugh out loud!
